Some of them you use on a daily basis, and others that just sit there collecting dust year after year. I too have the same dilemma. I make many purchases on discount art supplies and most of the time, I only use a select few.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a list of my 8 must have art supplies.\u00a0You can click on the images\/links for more details. For detailing, I use a regular 0.5mm mechanical pencil with a nice grip. I always remove the lead that it comes with and change it out for a 4B or HB by\u00a0Pentel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Mechanical Pencil Leads<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I use a size 0.5mm lead with a hardness of <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2d0HS57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">4B<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2d0IJmB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">HB<\/a>. The 4B is a much softer\/darker lead than HB and I use it for tight areas that need dark or final detailing work (eg: eyelashes). The 4B lead is my absolute favorite pencil. If I could only choose one pencil to draw with, it&#8217;s this one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Paper<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Ugi72f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1981\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/strathmore-drawing-paper-best-paper-for-drawing-portraits.jpg\" alt=\"strathmore drawing paper best paper for drawing portraits\" width=\"202\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/strathmore-drawing-paper-best-paper-for-drawing-portraits.jpg 307w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/strathmore-drawing-paper-best-paper-for-drawing-portraits-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/strathmore-drawing-paper-best-paper-for-drawing-portraits-292x420.jpg 292w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=httpkaitlintb-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00246YOY6\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Ugi72f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Strathmore Drawing Pad:<\/strong><\/a> I&#8217;ve used this for 70% of my speed drawings. It picks up the medium very very well, as the paper has a lot of texture to grasp onto the medium. I recommend this for beginners. It is really thick and has two distinct sides &#8211; one smooth and the other textured. Drawings on the smooth side look great before and even more after blending. Drawings don&#8217;t appear grainy, so it&#8217;s great for detailed, photo realistic artwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The quality of this paper is great for gifting or commissioned artwork because it is nice and thick which is great for framing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Erasers<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1nOMkaP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=B00006IFAJ&amp;Format=_SL250_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=httpkaitlintb-20\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=httpkaitlintb-20&amp;l=li3&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00006IFAJ\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1nOMkaP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">PrismaColor Kneaded Rubber Eraser<\/a>:<\/strong> I love these erasers! I prefer these over solid ones especially for erasing tight spaces or using it to pick up a layer of grap<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hite without having to\u00a0completely remove the medium and then reapplying it. The kneaded eraser\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">does an excellent job at picking up the graphite particles with just the slightest touch. If you want to learn more about them (like how to use one and what they do), go to <a href=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/2015\/05\/14\/what-is-a-kneaded-eraser-and-how-do-you-use-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">this blog post<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Blending Supplies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Tortillions and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2cqmfzB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Paper Stumps<\/a>:<\/strong> These tools are used to blend, smudge or smear\u00a0your\u00a0medium\u00a0to create all sorts of effects.\u00a0Paper stumps give smooth textures while tortillions give rough textures which you may prefer to use when creating textured fabrics or backgrounds. You can <a href=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/2015\/05\/08\/detailed-guide-how-to-use-a-blending-stump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">learn more about paper stumps here<\/a>. I even have a tutorial where you can make your own!<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Sandpaper:<\/strong> This is used to sharpen the Paper stump as well as get rid of the layer of graphite\/charcoal buildup. This is important, as you\u00a0need a\u00a0clean paper stump to avoid transferring\u00a0the medium\u00a0when going over lighter areas of your artwork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Tissue Paper:<\/strong> I mostly use this to smooth out charcoal or when going over light areas of the skin, I just brush the tissue over the paper in a swift motion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As an artist, you probably have hundreds of art supplies in your cupboard which you&#8217;ve somehow collected over the years.
