Learning\u00a0how to draw an ear is is a lot easier\u00a0when you learn to simplify it&#8217;s complex shapes like the example image below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1015 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Shapes-of-the-ear-1.jpg\" alt=\"Shapes of the ear 1\" width=\"245\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Shapes-of-the-ear-1.jpg 381w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Shapes-of-the-ear-1-260x300.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials I used for this simple ear drawing tutorial:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/459OKqV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Blending\u00a0stump<\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c1d948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HB and 4B Derwent pencil<\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; Canson Sketch paper (not the usual <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1U8wyWT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Canson <strong>Bristol<\/strong> Paper <\/a>which is my ultimate favorite. Ran out of that.)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 1:\u00a0Draw the shape of an ear<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Outline the shape of the ear making sure the bottom part of the ear (ear lobe) is smaller in proportion to the top part of the ear (known as the helix).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where exactly do I draw an ear on the head?&#8221; <strong><a title=\"How to Draw a Face from the Side\" href=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/2016\/03\/05\/how-to-draw-a-face-from-the-side\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here to find out!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1001\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-1.jpg\" alt=\"how to draw an ear step 1\" width=\"499\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-1.jpg 789w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-1-174x98.jpg 174w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-1-150x83.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Step 2: Draw the bumps and folds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Draw 2 curves to indicate the main folds within the ear. The first curve should line the middle to top part of the ear.\u00a0You can make this curve as smooth or jagged as you want.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to leave\u00a0a small amount of room around the edge. Wrap the curve up to form a flap (known as the tragus). Make sure you leave a good amount of space at the bottom for the ear lobe.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1002\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-2.jpg\" alt=\"how to draw an ear step 2\" width=\"266\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-2.jpg 380w, https:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-2-260x300.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 3: Shading preparation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At the beginning of the tutorial, I pointed out three\u00a0main shapes within an ear. We drew two of them in step 2. The third shape looks like the letter &#8216;y&#8217;. You can either draw the &#8216;y&#8217; very lightly or picture it on your drawing instead. We&#8217;ll be using it later in this step.<\/p>\n<p>Decide on a direction from which the light is coming from and use soft lines to indicate where the darkest shadows will fall. These places will be the most prominent folds and deepest valleys within the ear.<\/p>\n<p>For this\u00a0example, the light is shining from the left side.<\/p>\n<p>If any\u00a0shadows\u00a0cross through the &#8216;y&#8217;, make sure you warp them to\u00a0compliment any ridges, bumps or valleys of the &#8216;y&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1003\" src=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/how-to-draw-an-ear-step-3.jpg\" alt=\"how to draw an ear step 3\" width=\"268\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 4: Shade the darkest areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Shade the areas outlined in the previous step with a 4B pencil. Use\u00a0a blending stump\u00a0to blend each area separately (learn about how to use a blending stump <a href=\"http:\/\/rapidfireart.com\/2015\/05\/08\/detailed-guide-how-to-use-a-blending-stump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>).
